We also recommend using custom glossaries and clear author instructions when working with niche language pairs. If a language is labeled “experimental,” that means it may be more prone to rough edges - but the multi-pass approach still does a lot to polish it up.

However, footnotes and endnotes are treated as regular inline text - they are translated just like any other paragraph unless manually removed.

Advanced handling like auto-linking footnote markers, reflowing references, or creating dynamic note formatting is not yet supported. We recommend reviewing and reapplying structural polish (like notes formatting or styling) after translation, especially if your manuscript is heavily annotated.

Can I manually edit the translation results on the platform?

Not yet. Currently, BookTranslate.ai does not support in-browser editing - you can view all five AI-generated passes and download the results, but any manual edits must be made externally after export.

That said, a fully featured editing interface is one of our top development priorities. It will allow you to revise translations directly on the platform, track changes, and finalize your book in one streamlined workflow.

Are there any collaboration features for working with an editor or proofreader within BookTranslate.ai?

Not currently. BookTranslate.ai is a single-user platform - collaboration features like shared editing, live comments, or team access aren’t built in yet. However, you can make your project public with a shareable read-only link, which is perfect for sending to editors or collaborators for review. To work together more closely, you’ll need to export the text and use outside tools (e.g. Google Docs) for multi-user editing.

Right now, BookTranslate.ai lets you export the translation as plain text (.txt). You can export each pass individually, or just the final version. Formatting-focused exports like .epub, .docx, or .pdf are planned but not yet available. If you need one of those formats, we recommend translating your content here and then pasting it into your preferred writing or publishing tool to finalize layout and formatting.

Does the system preserve formatting from the original document (e.g., bold, italics, lists from a .docx file)?

No - BookTranslate.ai currently does not retain advanced formatting from .docx files, such as bold, italics, underlining, bullet points, or styles. The system extracts and processes plain text only. Basic structure like paragraphs, line breaks, and some headings are preserved, but all visual or stylistic formatting is stripped.

If formatting matters for your project, we recommend reapplying it after translation in your preferred word processor.

That said, our system does attempt to preserve markdown-style formatting (e.g., *, #, >). If you convert your .docx file to markdown using an online tool that preserves formatting in markdown syntax, you may be able to retain most of it through the translation process.

How do custom glossaries work?

You can define name, term, or phrase mappings during upload - these are enforced in every pass to ensure consistency throughout the entire translation. For example, if you're translating a fantasy novel and want "The Fellowship" to always be rendered as "La Communauté" (in French), you just add that rule once. The system will stick to it across all paragraphs and passes, no matter how many times it appears.

Are there any limits on the number of terms or phrases I can add to a custom glossary?

There’s no hard cap, but for best results, we recommend keeping your glossary under a hundred entries. Each glossary is injected into the AI’s context window during translation, so extremely large glossaries may reduce model performance or cause context clipping. For most books, even 30–100 terms is enough to maintain consistency without overloading the prompt.

Can I import or export glossaries, for example, from a CSV file?

Not yet - glossary entries are currently added manually through the upload form. CSV import/export is on the roadmap, and we know it would make term management much easier for large projects.

The glossary acts as a hard constraint: if a term is defined there, the AI is instructed to use the specified translation every time it sees that term. This ensures consistency, but it also means nuanced or context-sensitive translations may be overridden. If a word could have multiple meanings, we recommend not adding it to the glossary - or using clarifying instructions (e.g. “Translate ‘right’ as ‘correct’, not a direction”).

Not automatically. Each glossary is currently tied to a specific upload, so if you want to reuse a set of terms, you’ll need to manually copy them over when uploading your next book. Not yet - glossaries are entirely user-defined. The system doesn’t auto-suggest glossary terms or scan your manuscript to find repeat names, concepts, or phrases.
